The Lowest Cost per Bag, at Real Volume
Rotogravure prints from engraved copper cylinders. The setup is a genuine investment, and once it is paid for, nothing beats it on price, consistency, or depth of color across a very large run.
- Best unit cost at high volume
- Deep, consistent color across the run
- Ideal for proven, high-reorder SKUs
How Rotogravure Works
Each color in your design is engraved into its own copper cylinder. Those cylinders pick up ink, transfer it to the film, and do it again thousands of times an hour with almost no variation. The engraving is what makes the method expensive to start and brilliant once it is running. The cost of those cylinders does not change whether you print ten thousand bags or a million, which is the entire economic argument: the more bags you run from one design, the less that setup costs you per bag.
When Gravure Is the Right Answer
The deciding number is not your total order. It is your run size per design, because every design needs its own set of cylinders.
- High volume per SKUOne design, ordered in the tens of thousands and reordered.
- Settled artworkThe design is final. Changing it means new cylinders.
- Color-critical brandsWhere an exact brand color has to match every single time.
- Long-term staplesThe flagship recipe that has sold for years.
If that does not describe you yet, digital printing is almost certainly the better economics today.
Gravure vs Digital, Honestly
Two good methods with different break-even points. Neither is better in the abstract.
Setup Cost
Gravure pays for engraved cylinders up front, per design. Digital has no plate step at all.
Unit Cost
Gravure wins clearly at volume. Digital wins clearly below it. The crossover depends on your run size per design.
Flexibility
Digital lets you change art between runs for free. With gravure, a change means re-engraving.
Lead Time
Engraving adds time at the front. Digital skips it, so first delivery is sooner.
Most brands we work with start on digital and graduate one or two hero SKUs to gravure once the volume is real. Running both is normal, not indecisive.
