Stock bags are ready-made pouches in set sizes and colors, finished with your own printed label. No plates, no dieline, no long lead time. It is the lowest-risk way to get a real product on a real shelf.
- Low minimums and fast turnaround
- Change the label without scrapping bags
- Clear upgrade path to full custom
What a Stock Bag Actually Is
A stock bag is a pouch that already exists. It was made in a standard size, in a standard material, in a standard color, and it is sitting on a shelf waiting for a brand. You add a printed label, and you have a finished retail package. What you give up is full-bleed printing and a shape of your own. What you get back is speed, a far smaller order, and the freedom to change your mind about your branding without throwing away thousands of bags.
When Stock Is the Smart Call
Stock is not a lesser option, it is a different stage. There are situations where it is clearly the better business decision.
- You are still testingRecipes, sizes, and names all change early. Labels change cheaply.
- You have many SKUs, low volumeOne bag, many labels, no plate cost per flavor.
- You need it fastFarmers markets, a trade show, a retailer trial next month.
- Seasonal or limited runsA short-lived product that does not justify a custom bag.
Our full comparison, stock versus custom pet food bags, covers where the crossover happens.
The Honest Trade-Offs
We would rather you know these up front than discover them at the shelf.
Shelf Presence
A label on a plain bag will never have the impact of a full-bleed printed pouch. Next to custom competitors, the difference shows.
Fixed Sizes
You fit your product to the bag rather than the other way around, which matters a lot with kibble because bags are built by volume.
Per-Unit Cost
Cheap to start and more expensive per bag at volume. There is a point where custom simply costs less.
Material Range
You choose from what exists. High-fat and freeze-dried raw sometimes need a barrier the stock range does not cover.
If your product is high fat or freeze-dried, check the barrier first. Our post on grease resistance explains what to look for.
Finishing a Stock Bag Well
A stock bag done thoughtfully looks deliberate. Done carelessly it looks temporary.
- Die-Cut LabelsA shaped label reads as design, a plain rectangle reads as a sticker.
- UV 3D Raised PrintTactile, raised ink that lifts a logo off a stock bag.
- Front and BackUse the back panel for ingredients and feeding guides.
- Kraft, Matte, or FoilPick the base bag that already suits your brand.
- Resealable OptionsMany stock sizes come zippered as standard.
- Hang HolesAvailable on stock sizes made for peg retail.
When You Are Ready to Graduate
Most brands run both for a while, moving the proven sellers to custom first.
